Gem City Catfé is looking for a cat expert for our Cat Care Coordinator! They are responsible for managing all aspects of the health and well being of the cats living at the Catfe. This position ensures that the cats’ medical and behavioral needs are met, medical records are kept up to date, stock is maintained for food and medical supplies, and helps with on-boarding new team members in the cat care area. They also work behind the bar sharing Purrista duties such as taking orders, making drinks, processing adoptions, and maintaining a clean space. As a key-holder, opening and closing shifts are required. Animal welfare knowledge is required but no prior coffee bar experience is necessary!

SCHEDULE + COMPENSATION

Flexibility with hours between 30 - 35/week. Must have weekend availability, on either Saturday or Sunday. One day/weekend is typically required, but may vary based no holidays or other team members’ schedules. Gem City Catfe is closed Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day but has live animals on site always, who need care, so some short holiday hours may be required. Position is ready to be filled around early June, with some flexibility on start date. Compensation ranges between $15 - $17/hour, including tips, depending on experience. We offer paid vacation for full time staff members but unfortunately aren’t able to offer health insurance at this time. Staff members are eligible to receive low-cost veterinary care through Gem City Vet, including medications for their pets.

At least 21 years of age and high school diploma or GED required. 1 year of experience in animal care required. Must have experience and knowledge of the cat medical and behavioral needs. Must have a deep concern for the humane treatment and compassionate care of animals.


RESPONSIBILITIES

ANIMAL CARE

  • Assesses the general health of the cats on site on a regular basis for signs of stress, illness, injury, and abnormal behaviors. Works cooperatively and professionally with rescue partner veterinary staff and animal control/law enforcement personnel to ensure animals are provided proper medical care. Reports any significant physical, behavioral or emotional issues regarding shelter animals to the Store Manager.

  • Ensures animals are cared for daily to include proper feeding, watering, shelter and monitoring for signs of disease, injuries, and abnormal behavior. Maintains all animals in a clean, comfortable living environment, and ensures animals are provided veterinary care and treatment in a timely fashion. Performs the duties of an animal care worker as needed.

  • Maintains shelter records for each animal including: animal population each day, adoption records, current health observations and treatment & behavior records and cage/kennel cards.

  • Directs the socialization and training of Gem City Catfé animals to increase their adoptability. Trains and socializes in accordance with accepted humane handling techniques and advice from Gem City Catfé-approved animal behavior specialists.

  • Oversees all inventories and ordering of shelter supplies, cleaning solutions and equipment, and assures that appropriate quantities of all supplies are on hand at all times.

  • Facilitates maintenance tasks for the shelter facility to keep it a safe and clean environment for animals, staff, volunteers, and visitors. Ensures that all equipment used in the operations of the shelter facility is maintained in proper, safe working order. May be required to perform minor repairs of facility and equipment.


  • Ensures the safety and sanitation of kennels and adoption areas, to protect the health of both animals and people. Investigates employee accident reports. Responsible for ensuring that policies and procedures are followed.

  • Ensures that accurate and complete records for Gem City Catfé animals, adoptions, staff and volunteers, safety policies, and facility maintenance are maintained as required by Gem City Catfé policies, City contracts/ordinances and state and federal laws.

  • Reports to the Store Manager any inefficiencies with all animal care and facilities policies, procedures, and programs and recommends modifications. Stays abreast of current animal welfare issues as well as the changing needs of the community. Attends relevant workshops/seminars (with approval of President of the Board of Directors or the designee of the Executive Board) and maintains professional relationships in the field.

  • Apprises the Store Manager about important issues, problems, and new ideas regarding shelter management and animal care and welfare.

  • Regularly inspects all shelter areas to ensure work is accomplished, animals are cared for, facility is sanitary, and cleaning procedures are followed. Monitors safety compliance of staff. Works outside of normal shift hours to provide back-up care for animals if required.

  • Accurately rings sales orders into POS and counts back change to customers in a courteous and friendly manner.


REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be 21+ and have valid driver’s license with safe driving record and reliable transportation.

  • 1+ years required in animal care.

  • Must have a deep concern for the humane treatment and compassionate care of animals.

  • Must be comfortable with all breeds, sizes, and temperaments of on-site cats.

  • Must be willing to assist with handling and restraint of on-site cats if necessary.

  • Must be able to work after hours occasionally in the case of animal illness or medical emergencies.

  • Regularly required to handle food and hot beverages.

  • Bending, reaching, squatting, kneeling, lifting 30 lb items, and use of stairs required while performing job function.

  • Exposure to animal bites, cleaning agents, allergens, and zoonotic disease.

  • Strong work ethic with excellent interpersonal and planning skills. Ability to exercise independent judgment as appropriate and to work independently with little direct supervision.

  • Manages time efficiently and prioritizes work extremely well.
